Every custom home is one-of-one. Each place, family, and team presents a possibility to create a space that’s wildly personal and uniquely extraordinary.
This project, set outside of Park City, was built to be a place to retreat from the Midwest hustle-and-bustle, and into the mountains. It started as an empty lot in the Victory Ranch community, and transformed into a family’s dream mountain house. Situated among 6,700 acres of land, this very special location called for a special house to suit.

One of the things we love to incorporate when we can is a custom work of art. We felt like this house presented a special opportunity... the chance to not just source a piece of decor, but to add a personal touch tailor-made to this space, that spoke to these clients specifically. Not simply selecting art that would put the finishing touch on a room, but creating an heirloom that could only exist in this home, in this setting, for this family.
Then, we stumbled upon the Kyle Bunting x Tecova mural in Austin, TX. Beautiful, large custom pieces installed all over their retail store are striking and unique. (Check it out here.) Suddenly, the vision came together and we knew this was the kind of custom piece we wanted, too. So, we pitched it to the client and their response went something like… we trust you! Well then, giddy up!
This custom piece was our one-of-a-kind opportunity, the chance to create something unique to these clients, and this space. We all liked the idea of a landscape, something with visual interest but not too busy. A nod to the setting, and something to bring the outside in. Given the location, and importance of conservancy to the local community, it felt especially fitting to choose something to nod to the wild beauty of the home's surroundings.

Partnering with Kyle Bunting was an easy choice. They've made quite a mark in the hide rug space, creating beautiful area rugs, wall coverings, and custom art. Each of their unique pieces starts out the same way–with French Charolais leather, tanned in Italy and handcrafted in Austin. From there, it’s custom cut and colored to fit your space, match your taste, and tell your story. (See how here.)
They also happen to be a favorite long-term vendors of ours whom we've worked with on many projects–including a custom wall hanging in our own house (Josh and Amy here!). So, although we weren’t sure how or what we would create together–whether a rug or wall install–or where it would go, we hoped from the beginning to collaborate with them on something special for this home.

So, as we pulled colors and materials for the home, we also dreamed up what this custom piece might look like. The colors, composition, and where it might go. Luckily, in a setting like this that's a work of art all its own, inspiration is easy to come by.
The clients sent a series of images they took around the property, from different perspectives in different seasons. We stitched these together to create a part-real, part-dreamed-up location. A one-of-one reflection of our client’s own slice of heaven.
The Kyle Bunting studio took this pieced-together concept and smoothed out all the edges. Since the photos were taken at different times of day and year, we had to create a new color palette to bring them together. It took us a few iterations (i.e., weeks of circling back to the color samples in our office to get it just right) but eventually we landed on something we all loved. Deep sky blues and rusted peachy reds… a hint of goldenrod and green, plus of course lots of rich neutrals as always.

After a bit of back-and-forth to finalize the details and get the composition just so, the Kyle Bunting team took over getting this thing in production. The in-progress stages of creating something beautiful can be a little messy, but seeing it come to life is also deeply satisfying.
The process of starting from scratch is always more time-consuming and challenging than scouring for a ready-made piece. But also totally worth it. Besides, sometimes, we think the long hard search for the perfect pre-made thing is in vain, because the vision in your head is really yet to be created.
Often, the ideas in our head aren’t things we can go find, but that we need to make. They come to fruition through thoughtful collaboration, patient iteration, and the risk of believing in new possibilities.
Luckily, we worked with a team of people who believed in this, too. Our clients trusted us with a vision, and the Kyle Bunting team brought it to life. We're so glad we took the risk, and couldn't be happier with the final result, which somehow turned out even better than we imagined.
Do you see these textures and colors?! This is the attention to detail we love and why we work with partners like Kyle Bunting who are so skilled at their craft. It’s a work of art, in the truest sense, and was handled with intention in every phase, from first concept to final install.

From the beginning, we weren’t looking for something to fill the space, but to create a piece as unique as this family, and this place that means so much to them.
The way it ties the room together is almost the cherry on top–pulling the outside in, with peaks and valleys in the same deep burgundy hues as the leather arm chairs and the dark charcoal of the wood-clad walls. It’s set apart from the room as much as it is a part of it. We hope it starts conversations and sparks inspiration among anyone who finds themselves within view.
This piece is only a glimpse, and we hope it makes you eager to see the rest of the house. Keep your eye on the project page for the full tour, coming soon.
